Aeration effect on Spirulina platensis growth and γ-linolenic acid production BJM

The influence of aeration on algal growth and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) production in a bubble column photobioreactor was investigated. Studies were performed in a 20-L reactor at different aeration rates (0.2-2.5 vvm). Static, continuous, and periodic operation of air resulted in 41.9%, 88.4%, and 108% air saturation of dissolved oxygen, for which the corresponding values of GLA were 2.3, 6.5, and 7.5 mg·g-1 dry cell weight, respectively. An increase in the aeration rate from 0.2 to 2.5 vvm enhanced both the specific growth rate and GLA content under periodic sparging in the bicarbonate medium. Alexandrium ostenfeldii growth and spirolide production in batch culture and photobioreactor ArchiMer

Growth and spirolide production of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii (Danish strain CCMP1773) were studied in batch culture and a photobioreactor (continuous cultures). First, batch cultures were grown in 450 mL flasks without aeration and under varying conditions of temperature (16 and 22 degrees C) and culture medium (L1, f/2 and L1 with addition of soil extract). Second, cultures were grown at 16 degrees C in 8 L aerated flat-bottomed vessels using L1 with soil extract as culture medium. Finally, continuous cultures in a photobioreactor were conducted at 18 degrees C in L1 with soil extract; pH was maintained at 8.5 and continuous stirring was applied. Azadinium spinosum, a small dinoflagellate has recently been discovered and identified as the primary producer of azaspiracid-1 (AZA) and -2. Since AZA poisoning has been reported following consumption of contaminated shellfish it is important to have these toxins available for toxicological studies, and a sustainable production of AZAs as calibrants in monitoring programs without having to rely on natural events. In order to address this concern, continuous pilot scale cultures were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of AZA production from A. spinosum. Azadinium spinosum, a small dinoflagellate isolated from the North Sea, is a producer of azaspiracids (AZAs), a group of biotoxins associated with human illness following ingestion of contaminated shellfish. Using batch and continuous cultures of A. spinosum, the present study investigated the effects of different environmental and nutritional factors (salinity, temperature, photon flux density, aeration, culture media, nitrogen sources, phosphate source, and N/P ratios) on growth, maximum cell concentration, and AZA cell quota. Etude de l’influence de la concentration et de la spéciation de trace de cadmium sur la croissance et la physiologie d’une espèce phytoplanctonique ArchiMer

The aim of this study is to establish a continuous culture of a diatom (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) in a photobioreactor. As soon as the culture is stable and regulated, increasing cadmium amounts are added to the culture to induce a metal stress in order to study its influence on the production of Volatile Reduced Sulphur Compounds (H2S, OCS, MeSH, DMS and DMDS), and on the production of ligands. In this report, the methods used to assess the continuous culture and to analyse RVSC and other ligands production are described. J This study allowed us to assess cadmium impact on the VRSC and on the production of ligands.

Pavlova lutheri: Production, preservation and use as food for Crassostrea gigas larvae ArchiMer

The haptophyte Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in a 4-l flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP) in semi-continuous mode during 35 days, achieving a mean volumetric productivity of 0.4 g l-1 day-1. The microalgal culture was harvested from the photobioreactor at an average concentration of 3.5 g l-1 and subjected to different storage conditions in which the effects of temperature (1 °C, 4 °C and 25 °C), air supply and preservative (ascorbic or propionic acid) addition on the viability of the stored suspensions were investigated. Low temperatures (1 and 4 °C) and air-bubbling extended the shelf-life of the stored suspension, while no beneficial effects of ascorbic or propionic acid were found. Theory of turbid microalgae cultures. ArchiMer

Microalgae can be cultivated in closed or open photobioreactors (PBR). In these systems, light rapidly decreases as it passes through the culture due to the turbidity of the medium. Thus, microalgae experiment different light intensities depending on their position in the medium. In this paper, we study theoretically how the growth rate of microalgae is affected by different factors; incident light intensity, form of the PBR, microalgae population density, turbidity of non-microalgae components, and light path-length of the reactor.
